Bonnie and Belle, Donkey Rescues
Date Submitted: 01/01/2010
Many years ago our small farm consisted of a single horse an old lonely one at that, and a dog and 2 cats. He needed a friend. We found much more than that in Bonnie, a one year old gray jennet donkey who came to us via the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) a government program that places wild donkeys and horses from out west that are on overgrazed rangeland.
Bonnie traveled from China Lake Naval Weapons Center in California to New Hampshire to Connecticut. She spent all her days on our farm in North Stonington and later Stonington, each and every day loved to the very end. She was the best of friends to all of our equine family, which grew over the years. Bonnie taught our family patience, persistence and unconditional love. She was a one of a kind pet. When she passed away at the tender age of 23 we immediately set out to find another through BLM.
We had to do it all over again! Lindsay was not even born when we got Bonnie, but she was the influence and the ringleader in the process in obtaining our #2 donkey, Belle. Within months Lindsay found Belle, a chocolate jennet, 2 years old. Lindsay and her Dad traveled 13 hours round trip to upstate NY to bring her home to our expanded farm which consisted now of 2 horses and 3 dogs and 9 cats and a few bunnies. We adore Belle and have enjoyed every day of donkey ownwership. Donkeys bring character to a farm and they are low maintenence. They are priceless.
