Kristie and Sammy

As a child my dream was to own a cat. However, my parents were not so keen about the idea. After several years of begging, I finally convinced them to let me get a cat for my 10th birthday.
Unfortunately, several months after I brought my cat home she got lost. I was beyond devastated. After about a week of desperate searching, we decided to give up – we assumed that since we lived in the country she was probably caught by a coyote or fox. My parents decided to look for another cat for me; however, it was no longer “kitten season” and the pet stores and pounds were kittenless.
Luckily for us, a local rescue organization had just come across a bag of kittens which had been abandoned behind a restaurant. They had one kitten left - a scrawny little black kitten with a purr that could be heard rooms away. I feel in love with Sammy as soon as I saw him, and have had him ever since. He was a little uncoordinated at first – he didn’t seem to realize that he could retract his claws, thus he always used to get stuck – but he has developed into an expert hunter.
Sammy is the sweetest cat I have ever known, he has hardly ever growled, hissed, or scratched. Instead he loves to curl up in your lap or bed, purring like a little machine. Fortunately for me, we found my original cat hiding in a bramble brush in a local nature preserve the day after we brought Sammy home, but her personality doesn’t compare to that of Sammy’s. If I were to get another cat or any other animal for that matter, I wouldn’t hesitate to get a rescue. Not only do you give the animal much needed love and support which they may have lacked in their previous home, but you feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.
There is nothing better than the unconditional love of a pet, and rescues have perhaps an even stronger ability to love given their backgrounds.
